Role notes across games

Class names change from game to game. The jobs underneath them barely do. This page tracks the jobs: what each role is asked to do, where it tends to go wrong, and what changed recently enough to matter. It is a working reference, and we revise it when a patch moves the ground.

The five jobs that keep showing up

Anchor. The player who holds a position so everyone else can act. In Destiny 2 that is a Titan with a barricade or a well. In World of Warcraft it is the tank. In Warzone and ARC Raiders there is no label, but someone ends up holding the doorway.

Breaker. The player who opens fights on their own terms: entry fraggers, rushers, burst-damage classes. Why it matters: a breaker without a follow-up is just a respawn timer.

Support. Healing, ammo, revives, buffs, information. The role is rarely credited on a scoreboard and almost always visible in who survives the last two minutes.

Scout. Eyes first, guns second. Drones, recon tools, long sightlines, careful route choice in Escape from Tarkov. A good scout shortens every decision the squad has to make.

Flex. The player who fills whichever gap the lobby leaves open. Flex is underrated because it looks like indecision from outside.

Game-by-game notes

Warzone

What changed: loadout flexibility now matters more than operator identity. Why it matters: roles are assigned by weapon and perk package, so a squad can swap jobs between lives. Build around one anchor-style long-range gun and one close-quarters breaker, then let the other two slots follow the circle.

ARC Raiders

What changed: the threat is machines as well as players, so support and scouting carry more weight than in a pure shooter. Why it matters: a quiet scout who marks a patrol route saves more loot than a loud breaker ever recovers.

Destiny 2

Subclass choice defines the role inside a fireteam. We treat it as one entry among several here, with deeper build breakdowns living in regular posts rather than on this page.

Escape from Tarkov

Roles are informal and shift by raid. The scout is whoever carries the better thermal or sound setup; the anchor is whoever knows the extract. Keep it small: two players with clear jobs beat five with none.

World of Warcraft

The classic trinity of tank, healer and damage is still the base, but modern dungeon design rewards utility: interrupts, dispels, crowd control. Pick a class for its utility first and its damage meter number second.

How we use this page

  • Posts link back here when they assume a role name.
  • Each patch note on the blog says which jobs it touched.
  • If you disagree with an entry, write to [email protected] and tell us what you saw in play.
